Growing Wild Forest School is an all-outdoor, play-based nature connection preschool based in West Asheville serving children ages 3-6 during the school year and ages 3-8 during the summer. We are the first program established by The Forest School Foundation, a 501(c)3 dedicated to making nature connection education accessible to all young children.

Keep reading for desired traits and position responsibilities. * We are seeking balanced, grounded, and creative individuals with experience and training in early childhood education, traditional skills, and outdoor skills to substitute teach during the school year on an as-needed basis. Our preschool meets entirely outdoors on 3.5 private acres attached to 15 acres of public land, in all weather (with the exceptions of windchill below 22 degrees F and heat index above 100 degrees F) * * We believe that every day in the forest is a gift, and we are grateful to share that gift with children. Our school has no walls, and our ceiling is the wide sky; that means the consistent daily rhythm and set of agreements upheld by teachers maintain a compassionate and safe container for young children to play, grow, and learn. We believe that young children, like adults, have full personhood, and are learning how to navigate the world for the first time. We believe a village of compassionate adults must support them in this learning. This means that parents, teachers, and children are all on the same team. We model and encourage honest communication between all. * * Important qualities for substitute and assistant teachers: -CPR/First Aid certified, ability to pass federal background check -Experience in working with children ages 3-7 -Experience and/or training in child development, child psychology, and/or early childhood education -Knowledge of local flora and fauna -Nurturing, creative, mindful, grounded personality -Traditional/ancient skills such as tracking and handcrafting -Familiarity with outdoor skills such as shelter-building, fire-tending -Interest in continuing education in developmentally appropriate practices and nature-based mentoring -Physical fitness: ability to crouch, crawl, walk and run on uneven natural surfaces, sit on the ground, lift and carry up to 50 lbs for short distances -Tolerance of exposure to all forms of weather -Comfort getting dirty, holding insects and small animals -Interest in storytelling -Enthusiasm for singing (the enthusiasm is the important part, not musical perfection!) -Reliable transportation * * Preferred: Training and/or experience in Waldorf, Reggio Emilia, Lifeways, Positive and Respectful Parenting systems and/or nature-based mentoring * * TIME REQUIREMENTS: Substitute Teacher: 4.75 hr day from 7:45 am to 12:30 pm OR 12:45 pm to 5:30 pm on any given weekday, possibility for a series of consecutive 4.75-hr days or a full 5-day week. Substitutes given 12 hrs minimum notice about an opportunity to substitute teach the next day Assistant Teacher: 3 days each week at 4.75 hr/day, from 12:45 to 5:30 pm.
